of the open ocean as the source of the material as in the case of the Sargasso-sea faunas. Such is the Genessee shale which like the Genundewa limestone contains in the abundant Styliolinas a typical planktonic element, the Genundewa limestone representing a Devonian pteropod-ooze. The widely extending Chatanooga shale is characterized by the conodonts, now recognized as the teeth of cyclostomes. It was formed in nearshore and lagoonal areas where the cyclostomes died after the spawning season but which were not open to Sargasso-sea invasions from the ocean. The same is true of the Carboniferous and Permian shales. It is probable that when attention is directed to the possible planktonic elements of the Paleozoic marine faunas, more forms will be recognized as being of that nature.

متن کاملEarly evidence for complex social structure in Proboscidea from a late Miocene trackway site in the United Arab Emirates.
Many living vertebrates exhibit complex social structures, evidence for the antiquity of which is limited to rare and exceptional fossil finds. Living elephants possess a characteristic social structure that is sex-segregated and multi-tiered, centred around a matriarchal family and solitary or loosely associated groups of adult males. Although the fossil record of Proboscidea is extensive, the...
متن کاملChromosome painting among Proboscidea, Hyracoidea and Sirenia: support for Paenungulata (Afrotheria, Mammalia) but not Tethytheria
Despite marked improvements in the interpretation of systematic relationships within Eutheria, particular nodes, including Paenungulata (Hyracoidea, Sirenia and Proboscidea), remain ambiguous. The combination of a rapid radiation, a deep divergence and an extensive morphological diversification has resulted in a limited phylogenetic signal confounding resolution within this clade both at the mo...

The subtribe Eritrichiinae belongs to tribe Rochelieae (Borginaceae; Cynoglossoideae) which is composed of about 200 species in five genera including Eritrichium, Lappula, Hackelia, Lepechiniella, and Rochelia. The majority of the species are annual and grow in xeric habitats. The genus Lappula as an arid adapted and the second biggest genus...

In this study, phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary trends of morphological characters of Astragalus sects. Acanthophace and Aegacantha were studied using nrDNA ITS and rpl32-trnLUAG datasets while Astragalus stocksii was selected as the outgroup. The phylogenetic results indicated the non-monophyly of A. sect. Acanthophace in its current circumscription due to the distant exclusion of A...
